Biggest NFL disappointments of 2016

There were a number of players who had positive projections for 2016. Some followed through while others can be labeled as the biggest NFL disappointments of 2016.

1 of 25

Ezekiel Ansah, DE, Lions

It's been a year of regression of Ansah, who has only two sacks after tallying 14.5 in 2015. Ansah didn't get his first sack of the season until Week 15.

Gary Barnidge, TE, Browns

Barnidge came out of nowhere to be a productive tight end for the Browns in 2015. He didn't disappear this year, but had 431 fewer receiving yards and seven fewer touchdowns.

Blake Bortles, QB, Jaguars

The Jaguars went 5-11 in 2015, but Bortles showed progress in his second season by throwing for 4,428 yards and 35 touchdowns. He regressed in his third year, failing to reach 4,000 yards and throwing only 23 touchdowns.

Jamaal Charles, RB, Chiefs

Charles was expected to return from a torn ACL this season, but suffered setback after setback and played only three games before needing surgery on both knees. Now in his 30s, Charles' career could be at a crossroads.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Jets

Fitzpatrick and the Jets were at a stalemate for most of the offseaseason before agreeing on a one-year deal. He couldn't re-create the "Fitz-Magic" of 2015, going 3-8 in 11 starts and throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.

Coby Fleener, TE, Saints

Fleener signed a huge offseason contract with New Orleans, as the Saints tried to replace what they'd lost in Jimmy Graham and Ben Watson. Unfortunately, Fleener was a non-factor for much of the year, with only 50 receptions for 631 yards.

Michael Floyd, WR, Cardinals/Patriots

Coming off three consecutive 800-plus yard seasons, Floyd fell flat with the Cardinals before getting released following a DUI arrest. He was scooped up by the Patriots late in the season.

Jared Goff, QB, Rams

The first overall pick in the NFL draft, Goff didn't find the field regularly until mid-November. He went 0-7 in his starts, with an awful 5.3 yards per pass attempt.

Todd Gurley, RB, Rams

After averaging 4.8 yards per carry and 85 yards per game in his rookie season, Gurley's numbers plunged following the move to LA. He had only 3.2 yards per carry and 55.3 yards per carry in his sophomore season.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Texans

They said the quarterback play couldn't get any worse for the Texans. It certainly did in 2016, and Hopkins felt the sting. He failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since his rookie season, and had only four touchdowns.

Matt Jones, RB, Redskins

After entering the season was Washington's starting running back, Jones quickly fell out of favor as Rob Kelley emerged. He was a healthy scratch during Washington's final eight games.

Eddie Lacy, RB, Packers

After playing overweight in 2015, Lacy lost weight with the help of P90X in the offseason. He looked quicker in the five games he played, but missed the rest of the year with an ankle injury.

13 of 25

Jeremy Langford, RB, Bears

Expected to replace Matt Forte, Langford struggled to start the year and was relegated to the bench later due to Jordan Howard's breakout. Langford had only 62 carries for the year, averaging 3.2 yards per carry.

14 of 25

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Chiefs

Maclin got off to a slow start, and was hampered by a groin injury that caused him to miss four games. He did look healthy late in the season, but averaged only 45 yards per game as Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill emerged in the Chiefs offense.

15 of 25

Doug Martin, RB, Buccaneers

Coming off a 1,400 yard season and contract extension, Martin wrestled with injuries and finished his season with a PEDs suspension. Averaging just 2.9 yards per carry, Martin's days in Tampa Bay could be over.

16 of 25

Tyrann Mathieu, S, Cardinals

Mathieu played only 10 games in 2016, and was hindered by the knee injury he suffered in 2015. He had only 33 tackles and one pick in the time he did play.

17 of 25

Cam Newton, QB, Panthers

The defending league MVP, Newton was bumped and bruised due to poor offensive line play and saw his touchdown passes go from 35 in 2015 to only 19 in 2016.

Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Cardinals

Once considered the top prospect in college football, Nkemdiche had a bizarre final year at Ole Miss and dropped all the way to 29th pick in the 2016 draft. The Cardinals are probably already having buyer's remorse, as Nkemdiche played very sparingly in six games.

19 of 25

Brock Osweiler, QB, Texans

Houston backed up the Brink's truck for Osweiler after he went 5-2 as a starter with the Broncos last season. He threw more picks than touchdowns in 14 starts and was eventually benched late in the season.

20 of 25

Adrian Peterson, RB, Vikings

Peterson led the NFL with 1,485 rushing yards in 2015, but now it's fair to ask what he has left going on age 32. He played only three games due to a knee injury, making a miraculous and probably ill-advised return late in the year while Minnesota was still in the playoff race.

21 of 25

Darrelle Revis, CB, Jets

The Hall of Fame is in Revis' future, but 2016 was a season he'd like to forget. He was burned regularly, and had only one interception in 15 games. A move to safety has been rumored.

22 of 25

Sheldon Richardson, DE, Jets

Richardson has made some bad headlines off the field, and his performance on the field in 2016 wasn't great. He had a career-worst 1.5 sacks after recording 13 sacks over the previous two seasons.

23 of 25

Allen Robinson, WR, Jaguars

After a breakout season in 2015, recording 80 catches for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns, Robinson wasn't nearly as productive in 2016. He had only 883 receiving yards and six touchdowns, seeing his yards per reception average drop by more than five yards.

24 of 25

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings

The 23rd overall pick in the NFL draft, Treadwell is already being labeled a bust by some analysts. He played in only nine games, and had just one reception.

25 of 25

J.J. Watt, DE, Texans

Watt rushed back from back surgery, and that was apparently a mistake. He played in three games to start the season before needing another back procedure that ended his year.
